Your Eminence,

It is because of the courageous and discerning stance you have taken in the face of these things that I write.

It seems from the description on the web (cf. enclosure) that Opus Bono Sacerdotii is an association not altogether unlike Padre Teobaldo’s FRATERNITAS. Besides being gifted at getting to the bottom of problems priests are facing, this Capuchin of Genoa is fearlessness before superiors, and has the trait for which his Order is renowned: readiness to come to the aid of people in trouble (the Capuchins, of course, having been founded in similar confusion).

For years Padre Teobaldo has been, quite boldly, working with a whole network of people: lawyers, canonists, a hospital of nuns to help priests, as well as convents where they can go to get away, to rehabilitate – even cloistered Nuns praying for them. Very few canonists will dare fight superiors who have power and influence, because they (especially the laymen) depend on the good graces of the tribunals to continue practicing.

I’ve tried to be in touch with him, but for rather obvious reasons, it’s difficult to extend Padre Teobaldo’s apostolate to America. Permit me to ask if, as it is hoped, the group in Chicago can be counted on also for complex cases. I have one case in mind, and I write to find out for myself, not for publicity or even for the party involved, so as (i. a.) not to get his hopes up.

One wonders if the group can be counted on, indeed because many of these cases are so complicated. Members the American Episcopal Conference might not always feel free enough in all cases to assist priests as they really need to be assisted, with all justice and parity – which is why, although Padre Teobaldo works closely with Italian superiors and the Episcopal Conference, he, being a Religious, is freer from the various pressures.

I would be much obliged for your discerning words, dear Eminence. And until then, begging your blessing and with a pledge of prayers for your sacred ministry this Holy Week especially, I have the honor to be

Your obt. servant in Christ,
